BDS stands for Bachelor of Dental Surgery. It is an undergraduate-qualified dental course with a Five-year duration. BDS is a field of oral healthcare and it’s focused on dental issues like tooth fillings, scaling, tooth whitening, and teeth alignment.

BDS is the most popular medical course after doing an MBBS. The candidates in their final year are required to do a 1 year paid internship, which is rotation-based, where they take 2-3 rotations in various departments. Over the course of five years, students study subjects such as Oral Pathology, Dental Hygiene, Dental Histology, Public Health Dentistry, etc.

Eligibility For Joining BDS

If you want to join the BDS course, the following are the eligibility criteria:

  • The student must have a science background at the 12th level.
  • The minimum required percentage is 50, only then the candidate is eligible to attempt the NEET examination.
  • The candidate must qualify for the NEET.
  • Indian Nationals, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), Persons of Indian Origin (PIO), and Foreigners are eligible to join BDS, but the admissions process will be different.
  • The candidate must study Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics 
  • The lower age limit is 17 years and not have an upper age limit 
  • General category candidates must have secured the 50th percentile in the NEET exam.
  • SC/ST/OBC candidates must have secured at least 40 percent.
  • Also, candidates with fewer amendments should have secured a minimum of 45 percent in the NEET exam.

Entrance Examination For BDS

NEET examination is the main entrance, there are not several entrance tests. The admission generally takes place based on the NEET(National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) results.

  • Dental colleges will only admit students with 12th-class scores over 85 percent.
  • The NEET exam can be easily passed if you have the extensive subject knowledge, especially in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics.
  • Applicants should clear the cut-off scores for different prestigious colleges in order to proceed with their admission process through counseling.
  • The NEET counseling session will consist of 3 rounds, so be prepared.
